Parents workshop with FamilyLab/ exploring the difference between self esteem and self confidence

Dear EEB family,

Inge Vandegehuchte will be our special guest this time. Inge is a coach and personal development trainer, Familylab Belgium representative.

Familylab Association is a charitable organisation that aims to spread Jesper Juul’s (see below for more info) values such as equal dignity, authenticity, integrity and personal responsibility within families, schools, organisations and society.

We invite EEB families to dive into Jesper Juul’s philosophy and discuss together the topic of self esteem, as it is one of the major pillars of children's well being, a joyful childhood and transition into competent adults.

Not only self esteem lays the foundation for a healthy self acceptance and resilience, at the same time it can be our children’s best anti-dote to society’s performance pressure and the often resulting fear of failure, self doubt, perfectionism patterns, etc… So, well worth of being explored a bit further.

In our workshop for parents together we will explore the difference between self esteem and self confidence and how they complement each other, but are driven by totally different experiences as a child. We will discuss the role both play in children’s development and in their lives.

And, most importantly, we will look into different ways that we as a parent or guardian can contribute to strengthen our children’s self esteem. Together we will explore ways to help our children grow resilient in this ever changing world and grow as parents ourselves.

More about Jesper Juul (1948-2019).

Jesper Juul was a family therapist, father and grandfather. He was the author of numerous books, a renowned international public speaker and founder of Familylab. Even after his passing, Familylab continues to inspire parents to find new and healthier ways to become a successful family as well as professionals to create more profound relationships with children and youth in their care.

Through his practice, Jesper Juul understood that old fashioned, authoritarian upbringing was not working and he offered a completely different paradigm, a different mindset for parents, one with equal dignity as a starting point. He stressed that a children's behaviour is a feedback for adults actions and it always has meaning. In Jesper Juul’s books we find invaluable examples of how looking for this meaning can help us understand children better, build more meaningful relationships with them and enjoy parenting more.

Our EEB2 parent Paulina shares her personal testimony

" I first came across Juul’s books 2 years ago just as I was racking my brain on how to deal with more and more frequent outbursts of angry frustration of my 5 year old which seemed to be coming out of nowhere. Juul’s unique insight into what goes on in the mind of a child and how those feelings manifest in the way children relate to us  helped me like nothing before to understand where the outbursts were coming from and what to do in order to help my child. But it goes much further than that. The core principles of Juul’s approach are universal. It doesn’t matter if you child is 5 or 15 - equality, dignity, respect, openness and responsibility for the relationship with our children - none of those are new but the way he talks about them have changed me as a parent.  His books have been to me - and still are - a revelation, they have been transforming the relationships within our family ever since. I feel that I am getting better, even if the change is sometimes slow, in understanding and supporting my child, not to mention getting to know myself better in the process.

So I am immensely grateful to Inge from Familylab Association that she has agreed to embark on this project with us. Our goal is to share and spread Juul’s wisdom among as many parents and teachers as possible in the hope of improving their well-being and self-esteem, at school and beyond..."
